B/A Abortion
Abortion is a sensitive and complex topic. Even in this part of the world, where it has mostly been legal for decades, it remains controversial, little discussed and often treated as a taboo.
Aside from whether it should be allowed to terminate an unwanted pregnancy and deny a potential life its existence, little else is discussed. This leaves the topic on the surface, simplified to in favour or against, black or white, which is not only reductive, but also harmful to all those people who make this important decision in their lives, left to deal with it in isolation.
B/A (before/after) Abortion is a non-profit service that aims to help people who need, want, are considering or have had an abortion in Germany. It intends to connect these people and create a strong network of solidarity and empathy, so that one can go through this complex time in life as peacefully as possible, with all the support needed.
The service maintains a clear separation between the ‘before’ and the ‘after’ phases of an abortion, since they turned out to be quite distinct in needs.
The website brings together all the information needed to access an abortion in Germany, presented in a clear and concise way. It also offers a live call/chat service with people who have been in the same situation, providing a human and peer exchange.
For those who have already had an abortion and feel the need to share and talk about the experience and its aftermath, B/A Abortion offers a network of support groups, organised through its application and also led by peers trained as facilitators by the platform.
In these uncertain times, when reproductive rights seem fragile and public discourse around abortion is increasingly bitter, this service relies on peer support and emphasises the power of human connection.
